The 1991 growing season was one of the most intense, and exciting, in recent memory, with torrential rains in March breaking a 5-year drought, an unusually cool summer delaying the harvest a full month, and Indian summer conditions producing a near-perfect grape crop. We believe the wine that has been fashioned from these grapes comprises one of the great wines of the vintage, and possibly the decade, and below are some comments from wine writers who appear to agree.

Sleek, rich and focused, offering a tightly focused beam of spicy cedar, currant and black cherry. Firms up nicely on the finish, where the tannins flex their muscles, yet the fruit complexity and concentration pushes through.--'81/'91 California Cabernet retrospective. Drink now through 2010.

The 1991 Insignia is a powerful, backward, full-bodied wine with considerable aging potential. A saturated black/purple color suggests high extraction of flavor as well as youthfulness. The restrained, spicy, herb, cassis, and vanilla-scented nose is followed by rich, intense, tannic, lingering flavors that coat the palate. Give this broodingly large-scaled wine 5-7 years of cellaring and drink it between 2000-2020.
